WHAT TO DO IN THE HOLIDAYS…some help….
We understand the importance of making the right decision in finding high quality and affordable childcare. With such a wide range of childcare available the need for professional advice and guidance is crucial to your decisions.
The Family Information Service (FIS) is a dedicated service within Children’s Services at Norfolk County Council offering impartial advice and guidance to parents/carers with babies and children aged from 0-19.
This means not only can you obtain information on childcare providers you can also seek information and advice on a wide range of subjects that may support you and your family. The FIS has been developed as a one-stop-shop for parents and carers to access information. We hope you find the help you need there.
Issues such as cost, accessibility, inconsistent and sessional provision can all prove to be barriers to successful childcare provision. Don’t forget that the ‘Access to Activities’ fund is designed to subsidise access to extended services activities. The subsidy provides funding to make activities available to all pupils, not just those who can afford them. Contact Kariann Ellis, our Parent Support Advisor, for any help.
Holiday activities are run by staff at the Sports Centre at Framingham Earl High School. South Norfolk District Council advertises fun activities for young people. All activities are age appropriate and designed and instructed by staff dedicated to ensuring that the experience is both positive and challenging.
Active Norfolk has a busy programme of Summer Sports Camps for children aged 6-11. The East City and Framingham Earl Children’s Centre also has events for children aged 0-5. There are a number of private providers within our area who also host events.
• The Playbarn is a fun-packed indoor and outdoor centre specially designed for the sevens and under. Watch out for special events and themed days during school holidays.
• Whitlingham Outdoor Education Centre offers outdoor and adventurous activities in the beautiful setting of Whitlingham Country Park, Trowse, just on the outskirts of Norwich. Activities are for anyone from 8 years to adult regardless of experience or ability. They offer a large range of land and water based activities from beginner to advanced level. There is also the opportunity to gain certificated awards.
• Norfolk Ski Club provides a range of great activities.
• Barracudas offers activity day camps for children aged between 4 1/2 to 16 years. At the day camps children can try new activities, make new friends and most of all have lots of fun!
• The Garage, a performing arts centre aimed at young people, has promised this year’s summer programme will be its “biggest, most fun-packed” ever, with 684 places available for youngsters aged eight to 21. The 26 taster activities include street dance, stage make-up, theatre skills, script writing, beat-boxing, DJing, cheer leading, graffiti art, costume making and lighting design.
• OPEN has a vast range of facilities and activities to offer young people aged 12 to 25 within this historical landmark in the Norwich city centre. Just skimming the surface you will be sure to find something that appeals to you. Since 2003 the 50,000 sq-ft building, previously the regional headquarters of Barclays Bank, underwent a £12m renovation to transform it into the state-of-the-art Youth Venue we have today.
• Football in the Community (FITC) based at Norwich City Football Club is a football and Sports charity that aims to improve the health, social esteem, and skills of Children and Adults across Norfolk & North Suffolk. FITC provides activities in all School Holidays across Norfolk and North Suffolk. The courses are open to children as young as 3 years olds through to 15 years.
• Star Players operates as a business in Norfolk, providing parents with child care options as well as encouraging children to engage in sports. They focus primarily on football but also have a variety of other activities at their new Multi-Sport Club which operates in Trowse.
Good luck in finding something that meets your needs!

WHAT IS EXTENDED SERVICES?
Schools should work towards providing access to a ‘core offer’ of extended services. This includes:
• A varied menu of activities
• High quality out of school hours childcare (primary schools only)
• Parenting support and information, including family learning
• Swift and easy access to health, social and other associated services
• Wider community access, including adult learning
Schools should offer access to a varied menu of study support activities, including: academic ‘catch up’ and ‘stretch’ activities; homework clubs; arts activities; sports activities and other recreational activities.
Primary schools should provide access, or signpost, to high-quality childcare, 8am-6pm, five days a week, 48 weeks a year, based upon community need.
Secondary schools do not need to provide formal childcare – although some choose to do so – but their activity programmes before and after school need to provide a safe, supervised place to be.
Schools should provide access to parenting support, including information sessions around transition, signposting to services, parenting groups and family learning sessions.
Schools should provide swift and easy access to targeted and specialist services. All schools, working closely with other statutory services and the voluntary and community sector, should focus on the early identification of – and the provision of support for – children and young people who have additional needs or who are at risk of poor outcomes.
Where a school has facilities suitable for use by the wider community (e.g. playing fields, sports facilities, IT facilities, halls), it should look to open these up to meet the wider community needs in response to local demand.
As a Sports College, Framingham Earl High School has a number of links; with partner schools and with clubs, individuals and local organizations. For further details of the South Norfolk School Sports Partnership, please visit their website http://www.southnorfolkssp.co.uk/
